Quiet Time in Mark 14: 32-72

PERSONAL JOURNAL:

SIN ( Mark 14:36 ): To be honest, I very rarely pray like Jesus did here.  What I mean by that is, specifically the last few words He spoke in this prayer—“not what I will, but what You will.”  I typically pray for what I’m worried about or pray for what I want or do not want, but very rarely do I put in the exception at the end that I want my prayers to be aligned with Your will and if they are not, then that’s okay with me as well.  Please forgive me for this, Father, as I often forget that Your will and plans are far greater than anything I could fathom in this life.  Help me to do better with this, Father, so that I always defer to Your will in things and not my own.

PROMISE ( Mark 14:48-49 ): Jesus was always a very bold speaker in the eyes of the religious leaders of the times.  They are coming to arrest Him with clubs and swords and He essentially bashes them to their faces for this.  That isn’t the promise, though.  Immediately after bashing them for their approach to coming after Him like that, He says “but the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”  He makes them a bold promise to their faces that what they’re doing IS fulfillment of the Scriptures and so He accepts things as they are in that moment.

ATTITUDE ( Mark 14:72 ): Although Peter fell right into the trap which Jesus said He would about denying Him 3 times before the rooster crows twice, He did do something at the end that is revealing of an attitude adjustment I need in me as well.  Throughout all of that, Peter wasn’t paying attention to His truth; at least not until the second rooster crow.  When that happened, He realized that God’s truth was revealed and happened just as Jesus spoke.  It was in that moment that scripture says “he began to weep.”  He knew what he had done went against God’s truth, because he denied You to others, but he also knew that was just happened was yet another foretelling of things to come by Jesus that came true before Peter’s own eyes by Peter’s own hands.      He wept because of how hard Your truth hit Him and I must be able to get myself so deeply involved in our relationship, Father, that when Your truth hits me like a bag of rocks like it did with Peter here, that I also begin to weep.

COMMAND ( Mark 14:38 ): Anytime I am feeling that temptation may arise or is already upon me, I need to be better at following Your command here: “stay awake and pray so that you won’t enter into temptation.”  Jesus is very clear to His disciples, yet they do not listen to Him and instead continue to fall back asleep without praying.  Help me to be better at this, Father, so that when temptation comes, prayer is my first thought, not my last.

EXAMPLE ( Mark 14:60-62 ): Jesus provides such a powerful example of how we are to respond when confronted by those who are going against us.  He stayed silent when events and situations were being questioned because they knew the truth and nothing He said would change their opinions of Him in that respect.  It wasn’t until they questioned Him about His identity that Jesus decided to speak, in which case He confirmed their attempted “accusation” type of question about whether or not He’s the Messiah and the Son of the Blessed One.  Jesus stayed silent until His identity was needing to be spoken and so He spoke the truth back to them with “I am.”  Powerful example to follow here!  Thank You.

*DAILY NOTE: I know I haven’t been very consistent as of late, Father, but as always You give me such a great quiet time conversation with You.  Thank You for the great word, guidance, wisdom, and truth.  Thank You also for the conviction, Father.  Without conviction, I do not know what I need to work on to be honest.  When I’m convicted by the Spirit, however, it at least gives me a direction on my spiritual journey to work towards.  Thank You.
